Description
The South is particularly well watered, and for this reason, a hydroelectric dam was built there.
The artificial Lake Yaté submerged a vast area, creating—at the far west, within the Blue River Park—the nearly eternal Flooded Forest, made up of rot-proof hardwoods.
A unique, spectacular site—perfect for a kayak excursion!
Sud Loisirs offers both single and double kayaks,
which travel between Camp Bloc (not far from the Grand Kaori tree) and the Pérignon Bridge, crossing the Flooded Forest on all of our routes.
Note: The lake’s water level varies annually, so we constantly adjust our routes.
The exact departure and arrival points will be confirmed on the day of your visit, when you check in at our office at the Pérignon Bridge.
Note: Transport to the starting point of the Descente Classique is not included in this activity.
You must choose one of the following options in advance:
-
Hiking (via the main track or the Kakariki + Nothofagus trail)
-
Shuttle (to be arranged at the Park’s front desk that same morning)
-
Mountain bike (your own or ours, as part of the Combined Package)
To help you plan, see the map here.
The Descente Classique (approx. 1h30) lets you experience these highlights:
(Approximate schedule)
Departure at 1:00 PM from Camp Bloc / Arrival at 3:00 PM in the Flooded Forest
-
You first paddle along the Blue River bed (about 30 min)
-
Then gradually reach the lake and the Flooded Forest (about 30 min)
-
You may (depending on water level) choose to circle an island (+30 min)
-
The endpoint is near the Faré (shelter) in the Flooded Forest, with a viewpoint over the forest
To return to Pérignon Bridge (parking area), you can:
-
Walk along the main trail and/or take the Upper Viewpoint path over the Flooded Forest (sporty option)
-
Use a shuttle (booked that morning at the park desk, “return trip #5”)
-
Or bike the last 3 kilometers, if you chose our Bike + Kayak Combo
